Alessandra Celesia was born in Aosta, Italy, in 1970, and lives between Paris and Belfast. After studying modern literature and theatre, she began a career as an actress and stage director, focusing on experimental and collaborative creation. In 2006, she turned to documentary filmmaking with Luntano. This was followed by The Bookseller of Belfast (2011), Italian Mirage (2013), and The Miraculous Blue (2017), films that received critical acclaim at major festivals such as Locarno, Lussas, Visions du Réel, and Popoli, and won several awards.
In parallel, she has directed films in collaboration with the Théâtre de Chaillot and is actively involved in various live performance projects, the most recent being Heidi Project, presented at Lussas. In 2020, she returned to short formats with Come il bianco, followed by La Prinsessa Leui in 2023.
In 2024, she released The Flats, a feature-length documentary shot in Belfast that explores the enduring trauma of the Catholic neighborhood of New Lodge, marked by the legacy of the Northern Irish Troubles. The film was selected at numerous international festivals, including CPH:DOX, Visions du Réel, Sheffield DocFest, IDFA, Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, and the Gijón International Film Festival. The Flats won Best Documentary at the 2025 Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA) and is currently nominated for the David di Donatello Award in the documentary category.
