Cyril Brody is a documentary filmmaker and fiction screenwriter.
"A few years ago, I felt a vital need to cultivate my gaze, to protect and develop it, apart from my filmmaking practice of writing and directing. At first, I started collecting 'eyes' that I spotted in pairs around me—in the streets, among my friends, in the landscape (1000yeux_ouverts, my Instagram account). With my smartphone, this photographic gesture met my collector’s spirit: seeking and gathering what is similar-yet-different. The range of subjects has continued to expand since then; as I search for my series, I discover new ones. Photography has become my daily visual exercise, a free, obsessive, and uninhibited practice of my gaze. It’s as if my own eye has opened. It feels like assembling the pieces of an infinite, ever-changing puzzle. For me, these images are micro-stories offered by reality, yet they transcend it because they often only exist through the frame I create for them. They are also coded riddles, with variable geometry, readable on their own or in connection with those I add them to. It’s my treasure hunt."
Main films as a director: En Service (2007 – Jury and Audience Awards at Brive), Lorient-Esprit (2010), Latifa, le cœur au combat (released in 2017 – co-directed with Olivier Peyon). As a screenwriter, Les petites vacances (dir: O. Peyon, with Bernadette Lafont) and upcoming Tokyo Shaking (dir: O. Peyon, with Karin Viard – released in 2021).
